Family Bonds and Unexpected Blessings
Yesterday, as the fireworks lit up the sky, we spent the Fourth of July at home, surrounded by family. Embracing a multi-generational lifestyle has been a journey filled with unexpected joys and blessings. Each day brings new opportunities to be involved in our grandson’s life, and for that, we are profoundly grateful.
Kate, our daughter-in-law, keeps the household running smoothly. Whether it’s fixing things around the property or helping with daily chores, Zach is always there to lend a hand. Sheila, now flourishing in her new job, has become an invaluable source of knowledge for Carson. Known affectionately as SheBear, she imparts wisdom on a wide range of topics—from God and Jesus to fascinating facts about the natural world. Sheila’s teaching moments with Carson are truly special, covering everything from bugs and plants to the intricacies of our bodies
Opa, my husband, shares a deep and unbreakable bond with Carson. They embark on countless adventures together, honoring the dreams Keith had for his son. Whether they’re wielding Jedi swords or playing basketball, their “Just Boy” time is cherished and irreplaceable. Early mornings and evenings are reserved for Carson and me to tend to our garden. Carson takes his role as a young farmer seriously, and together we harvest our crops, finding joy in the simple, yet meaningful, tasks.
In the kitchen, Carson transforms into a chef, guided by Aunt SheBear’s culinary expertise. Dinner preparation is a family affair, filled with music, dancing, and laughter. The kitchen truly is the heart of our home, where memories are made, and bonds are strengthened. Our impromptu dance-offs and creative sessions of painting and drawing add a vibrant touch to our daily routines.
Balancing work from home with the demands of our non-profit has been challenging yet rewarding. Zach and I handle the grocery shopping, and I’ve taken to making fresh tea each morning. Our garden’s bounty, especially the basil, inspires new recipes and brings fresh flavors to our meals. Introducing vinegar into our diet and making our own bread has brought a sense of fulfillment and health to our lives.
Last week I concocted a homemade bug repellant and discovered the wonders of using vinegar for laundry. These small victories in our daily life are reminders of the love and teamwork that bind us together.
Living with Kate, a Gold Star Spouse, and Carson, a Gold Star Child, has deepened our bond in ways we never anticipated. The loss of our son Keith in 2021 has shaped our family, but it has also brought us closer. We are a Gold Star Family—beautifully and wonderfully made. Our journey is one of resilience, love, and gratitude, and each day we strive to honor Keith’s memory by living fully and joyfully.
Here’s to the unexpected blessings and the unbreakable bonds of family.
